Tolls in Portugal for rental cars: how they work and how to pay (2026)

Portugal has two toll systems, and knowing which one you're on is the whole game.

• Traditional toll booths (with barriers). Most of the main motorways run by Brisa, the A1 (Lisbon–Porto), A2 (Lisbon–Algarve), A3, A6 and others, work like the rest of Europe: you take a ticket or drive up to a booth and pay by card or cash as you exit, or glide through the green Via Verde lane if your car has a transponder.
• Electronic-only tolls (no booths). Some roads have no booths at all, overhead gantries photograph your number plate and there is no way to pay on the spot. These are the former "ex-SCUT" roads. This is the system that used to catch tourists out.

By law, Portuguese rental cars come fitted with an automatic toll device (a Via Verde transponder). In practice this means you don't have to do anything: drive through any toll, booth or electronic, in the Via Verde lane, and the tolls are charged to the card on your rental, plus a small daily service fee.

Expect roughly €2 per day for the toll service, typically capped per rental (caps and fees vary by company). It's worth it for the simplicity, you never stop, never register anything, and never risk a fine.

Without a rental company's transponder, the electronic-only tolls are where you need a plan, because you can't pay at a booth. Options for foreign-registered cars:

• EasyToll, at "Welcome Points" near the main border crossings from Spain (and some service stations), a machine links your credit card to your number plate. Tolls are then charged automatically for 30 days. Register on the day you first use an electronic toll.
• TollCard, a prepaid card bought online or at service stations, activated by SMS with your plate and card details.
• Via Verde Visitors, rent a transponder for a foreign-registered car and pay only for the months you use it.
• Post-payment, for electronic tolls, you can also pay a few days later at CTT post offices or Payshop agents.

The big paid routes are the Brisa motorways: Lisbon–Porto on the A1 is around €25 end to end, and Lisbon–Algarve on the A2 around €24. On these you can always just pay by card at the booth, so no registration is needed. The free alternatives (the old national roads, or now-free ex-SCUT motorways) are slower but cost nothing.

Rule of thumb: in a rental car, let the transponder handle everything and enjoy the trip. In your own car, the only roads that need action are the remaining electronic-only tolls, sort out EasyToll at the border and you're covered.
